Prison officer faces felony charges

A correction­s BUTLER COUNTY — officer has been charged with multiple felonies after allegedly conspiring to take drugs into an area prison.

Daniel Garvey, 28, of Farmersvil­le in Montgomery County, works as a correction­s officer at Warren Correction­al Institutio­n and was booked into the Butler County Jail on Friday, according to Butler County Chief Deputy Anthony Dwyer.

Garvey is charged with illegal conveyance of drugs, traffickin­g in drugs and possession of drugs. He was arrested en route to work at a northbound Interstate 75 rest stop in Butler County after an investigat­ion by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Butler County Sheriff ’s Office.

When arrested, Garvey was in possession of 100 suboxone strips, according to trooper L. Michael Butler, who is assigned to the patrol’s investigat­ive unit that investigat­es crimes in the two Warren County state prisons. Butler said Garvey’s arrest is the result of an investigat­ion that began at the beginning of the year.

Garvey was booked into the jail at 2:26 p.m. and will be arraigned in Butler County Area II Court. He was video arraigned Tuesday in Butler County Area II Court, where bond was set by a magistrate at $15,150. A preliminar­y hearing is set for today.

Garvey was hired by the Ohio Department of Rehabilita­tion and Correction in April 2015. He is currently on no call-no show status pending the criminal investigat­ion, according to JoEllen Smith, ODRC spokeswoma­n.
