Airline’s flights going seasonal

- Rich Gillette

Two weeks ago we reported Allegiant Air was going to seasonal flights from Dayton for one of its destinations in Florida.

It appears now all of the flights from Allegiant Air will only be seasonal from the Dayton International Airport.

A flight from Dayton to Punta Gorda will go on seasonal hiatus later this month, Allegiant spokeswoman Sonya Padgett told us last week. The last flight leaves Dayton on April 21, according to the airline’s booking website.

Two other routes to St. Petersburg and Orlando will go on seasonal hiatus later this year, Padgett said. Online bookings aren’t available past Sept. 3 for St. Petersburg/ Tampa and past Aug. 13 for Daytona Beach/Sanford.

“That’s what’s so frustrating. We spent two years building this service up and now they’re doing this. It doesn’t make sense other than if they don’t have enough airplanes,” Dayton’s airport director Terry Slaybaugh told us last week.

Allegiant is the only low-cost carrier remaining at the Dayton airport.

More internships available

Area college students have more chances for internships at Dayton area businesses than previous years.

The Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education announced last week that it is inching closer to its goal of increasing the number of internships in the region to 20,000 by the year 2020.

SOCHE launched the initiative, called 20by20, six years ago and the number of internships has already increased by around 46 percent.

The Dayton region has gone from offering around 11,066 internships in 2012 to around 16,187 today, according to SOCHE. That number is up by more than 1,000 almost a year ago and means SOCHE is just over 3,800 away from reaching its goal.

SOCHE’s member colleges, which include local schools such as Wright State University, the University of Dayton and Central State University, among others, represent around 200,000 students, according to the organization.
