Make homes more pet-friendly with right flooring choice

- Dona Niswonger Home Builders Association of Dayton

Sixty-eight percent of U.S. households own a pet. A pet brings so much life to your home, but they can also be messy with their shedding fur, toys and cages.

However, there are many ways to make your home a bit more animalfriendly, especially with your choice in flooring.

You want something that is durable, scratch resistant, water resistant, stain resistant and easy to clean. Luckily there are lots of options.

Here are some of the best floor types for homes with pets:

Bamboo

While other hardwood floor types are not ideal for pets because of their ability to stain and scratch, bamboo is the exception. Bamboo is the hardest type of wood and is stain resistant and environmentally friendly, which makes it a great option even for those without pets.

Stone and tile

Stone and tile are extremely durable and hold up to the wear and tear from our pets. They don’t scratch easily and spills and accidents are easy to clean up on these floors.

The one thing to keep in mind though is that these floors do tend to be cold and hard.

Vinyl

Just because you have a pet doesn’t mean you have to break the bank on your flooring.

Vinyl is a great cheaper option, and with so many styles you can find one that fits your home and is budget and animalfriendly.

It is scratch and stain resistant and any mess that does happen is easy to clean up.

Vinyl is also extremely quiet and is soft to walk on compared to other floor types. For those with animals that shed like crazy, vinyl can be a great option because it promotes low levels of allergens.

These are just a few options, the needs of you and your pet will ultimately sway your decision in what is best for you and your home.
