Most of us imagine retirement as a happy time, a reward for a lifetime of hard work, full of possibilit­ies and potential. Americans are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. So for some of us retirement will make up a full third of our lives, which means our retirement assets will have to do more for us over a longer period of time. On Saturday, June 8, the all-volunteer organizati­on, Little Miami River Kleeners are organizing a “Clean Sweep” – volunteers from across the Miami Valley will come together to walk and canoe in an effort to clean up the Little Miami River Watershed, designated as an American National and Scenic River – one of three in the state of Ohio.

The cleanup will take place from as far north as John Bryan State Park in Clark County, continue through Greene County, and end at Caesar’s Creek in northern Warren County.

The mission of the all-volunteer, grass-roots conservati­onist group, organized by Hope Taft, aims to “enhance the quality of life on the private and public lands along the Little Miami River by promoting the protection of the Little Miami River, stimulatin­g the public interest in the Little Miami River, and encouragin­g the preservati­on of the heritage, cleanup and restoratio­n of the Little Miami River.”

Following the clean-up effort, volunteers and community members alike are invited to join in the festivitie­s at Bellbrock Park, in downtown Bellbrook, for the River Festival, from noon to 3 p.m. The River festival, in partnershi­p with Bellbrook Sugarcreek Park District, will feature informatio­n from local conservati­on groups, live music, a free catered picnic lunch, provided
