COMMUNITY DAY TODAY AT DAYTON ART INSTITUTE

-

In conjunction with the focus exhibition Dorothy Height’s Hats, the Dayton Art Institute (DAI) has announced a special Community Day at the museum, sponsored by Grandview Medical Center, this Sunday, June 16.

The DAI will waive its suggested general admission and welcome the community to its collection galleries and Dorothy Height’s Hats, as well as the focus exhibitions Monet and Impressionism and In the Company of Friends: The Kettering and Patterson Legacy, free of charge.

In addition, the DAI has announced that Dorothy Height Hat’s has been extended and will be on view at the museum through July 21.

“It is an honor to present these beautiful hats that belonged to Dr. Height, someone who was such an important figure in the fight for equal rights for all,” said DAI Chief Curator Jerry N. Smith. “The hats, many made by top designers, are like sculptures in fabric and can be enjoyed as such. However, knowing who wore them makes each that much more significant. The response to this exhibition has been phenomenal, and we’re excited to arrange to keep them on display here at the DAI for an additional month.”

Dorothy Height’s Hats features hats worn by Dr. Dorothy Irene Height (1912– 2010), an author and icon of civil rights who was known for her leadership, courage, determination, and hats! This exhibition will explore the life of Dr. Height by bringing together 43 of her favorite and most iconic hats.
