Mini-roundabouts proposed for Dayton Mall area off Ohio 741

Traffic study is topic of open house today from 4 to 7 p.m.

Two MIAMI TWP. — mini-roundabouts are being recommended to help control traffic on a road officials want to extend to Ohio 741 near the Dayton Mall.

The pair of small traffic circles — proposed at Innsbruck Drive and Rosecliff Place — are included in a traffic study for Vienna Parkway, the $2 million completion of which would create another traffic signal on the heavily traveled state route.

“The proposed Vienna Parkway connection to SR 741 would impact traffic patterns. It is anticipated that 50 percent would travel towards SR 741 and the remaining 50 percent would continue to use Mad River Road,” where the parkway starts, according to the traffic study.

Vienna Parkway includes 82 feet of right of way with 44-feet wide pavement, suggesting it is broad enough to accommodate the traffic control proposal, according to the study.

“The existing pavement is wide enough for either four travel lanes or two travel lanes with on-street parking on both sides. Sidewalks are provided on both sides,” the traffic study states.

The mini-roundabouts are estimated to cost about $150,000 each, the study states.

The study by LJB is the subject of an open house today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Miami Twp. Government Center, 2700 Lyons Road. More traffic has been a concern in the Vienna Estates neighborhood north of the Dayton Mall in recent years as housing and commercial developments have been proposed nearby.

Ryan Homes three times sought approval for plans to build more than 80 homes the past few years, all of them voted down by trustees.

Now, the township wants to develop several acres it purchased with the anticipation the 650-foot extension of Vienna Parkway, which officials have said has been on the thoroughfare plan for decades.

The township’s plan — Vienna Center — is a 13-acre proposal to develop the area around the planned Vienna Parkway intersection at Ohio 741 and Cox Arboretum’s entrance.

A significant part of that development would be a care facility proposed by Trilogy Health Services. The Louisville Ky.-based company is targeting completion of its site in 2021, township officials have said.

The plan to extend Vienna Parkway currently includes two westbound lanes including a turn lane - and an eastbound one, records show. The west and eastbound lanes near the intersection includes a median.

That lane configuration could change, township officials said, depending on a traffic study by the Ohio Department of Transportation.
