Make sure to do your homework before buying an appliance

If you just moved, you may be searching for new appliances. Maybe an old appliance broke and you are in the market. Regardless, it can be exciting to get something new for your home.

However, the process of buying an appliance can be daunting. In fact, U.S. electronic­s and appliance store sales amounted to about $99.4 billion in 2017. There is a lot for you to choose from. An appliance is a big investment and you will want something that meets your needs and budget, but also looks nice.

Better Business Bureau offers these tips:

■ Know what you need and what features are a must. Do not buy the biggest and best appliances just because they look like a good deal. Those may not be suited for your lifestyle.

■ Remember, buying used appliances can be a great way to cut costs, but you have to shop smart. Consider buying from a used-appliances store that sells refurbishe­d products with warranties.

■ Understand a good price doesn’t always mean it’s a good deal. Do your research online and read customer reviews. Talk to friends and family about their preference­s and experience­s.

■ Know you may be able to save by bundling appliances if you are purchasing more than one.

■ Ask about price matching if you find an appliance somewhere other than your favorite retailer.

■ Sort by Energy Star qualificat­ion online when possible. There are Energy Efficiency Guide links that tell you average kWh usage and cost to run the machine annually. Your utility company may even provide a rebate for purchasing an Energy Star appliance.

■ Ask your sales person if there is a warranty included and what the terms are.

■ Pay attention to all dimensions: width, height and depth. Be sure the appliance will fit in your home. Will you be able to get it in the door and will it fit in the designated spot?

■ Be ready to haggle. If something is listed at a certain price that does not necessaril­y mean you can’t get a better deal.

■ Ask about delivery and installati­on. Sometimes there are additional costs to delivery and installati­on of a new appliance. Also, ask if they will haul away the old appliance.

■ Know the store’s refund/ cancellati­on policy.
