Learning continues in summer for WC staff and students
Learning happens all year long in West Carrollton Schools, especially for students attending Harold Schnell Elementary. The school operates on a yearround calendar, and those students returned to school July 17. The traditional calendar students will return August 20.
Students at Schnell will see a new principal, but Pam Dudley has been a part of the school district since 2009. She has been a principal at Harry Russell and Frank Nicholas and is excited to bring her experience to Harold Schnell students, staff and families.
Summer school was offered for third-grade students in reading. The Journeys reading curriculum was introduced during the 201819 school year with lessons integrating other subject areas including science and social studies. The summer studies program at the high school focused on credit recovery to help students stay on track for graduation.
It wasn’t just about academics for students during the summer! Athletic camps were held for students of all ages in basketball, cheerleading, football, soccer, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. The fundamentals, as well as advanced skills, were presented by varsity coaches and high school student-athletes. Music camps were also part of summer learning programs. Vocal Expressions students started camp to begin preparing for the school year. The marching band and color guard started camp to learn new music and routines for upcoming performances.
Students weren’t the only ones busy this summer! Teachers returned to school to attend PAX sessions. The PAX Good Behavior Game provides instructional and behavioral health strategies used by teachers and students. PAX sessions were attended by teachers in grades three through five and will give students tools they can use in the elementary classroom as well as take with them when they advance to the middle and high schools. Teachers and support staff also returned to school for advanced PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) training. PBIS has already been utilized in the schools. The summer training for employees provided more intensive, specific training. Middle school and high school math teachers have been working this summer to prepare for a new math curriculum being introduced at the beginning of the school year.
Some employees attended workshops and conferences during the summer. School Resource Officer (SRO) Tiffany Osburn, attended a conference for SRO officers. Attending sessions and sharing experiences with other SRO officers will give her additional insight and ideas for student safety. School Superintendent Dr. Andrea Townsend will soon be attending a conference on cultural responsive practices and will be sharing that information with staff.
West Carrollton students and staff are always given the opportunity to learn and grow as individuals and as a team and to share lessons with each other.
