Huber YMCA to add 5,000 square feet
Almost $1M expansion to house free weights, more bikes, treadmills.
The Huber Heights YMCA is adding a nearly $1 million expansion.
The expansion will add 5,000 square feet to the wellness center. Executive Director Chris Lindeman said the construction will cost around $700,000 and the YMCA will be adding about $200,000 worth of equipment into the new area.
Construction started in July and will be finished in mid-December, Lindeman said.
The YMCA will be open during the construction.
Lindeman said the only time there might be a disruption for members is when the additional square footage needs to be attached to the current facility, which will come in the final steps of the project.
“This will help us serve our current 12,000 members and the surrounding community, too,” Lindeman said. “We’re here to serve the community.”
Lindeman said he also believes the expansion could bring more people into the facility.
Huber Heights City Manager Rob Schommer said the city is glad the YMCA has the need for an expansion.
The expansion will house free weights and functional fitness equipment. The added space will also allow for more cardio equipment like bikes and treadmills, Lindeman said. Functional fitness is a type of training that combines movements and trains muscles for real-life movements, like carrying groceries.
Lindeman said he and his team have been planning the expansion for about a year.
The Huber Heights YMCA has a wellness center that is about 4,900 square feet, an indoor walking track, an indoor swimming pool and a family gymnasium.
Lindeman said the YMCA does not turn anyone away from a membership due to their inability to pay. The YMCA will work with community members if they want a membership.
