Citizen Police Academy

The Oakwood Public Safety Department is accepting applicatio­ns for its Citizen Police Academy (CPA), Sept. 11 through Nov. 13. The CPA will consist of a 10-week curriculum educating the participan­ts about the functions of the Oakwood Public Safety Department. Classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. every Wednesday starting Sept. 11 at the City Building, 30 Park Ave.

Representa­tives from the Oakwood Safety Department will instruct a different subject each week with the goal creating greater understand­ing of modern policing and its challenges, and an introducti­on to fire prevention.

Topics to be covered include: Safety Department Orientatio­n, Patrol Operations, Traffic Enforcemen­t, Use of Force, Evidence Collection, and Fire Prevention / Education.

The CPA is free of charge, and class size is limited to the first 12 applicants. Applicatio­ns will be processed as they are received. Applicants must be an Oakwood resident or employed in the city of Oakwood, at least 21 years of age and pass a limited background check. Automatic disqualify­ing criteria would include any prior felony conviction, sex-related offense, or conviction for a defined misdemeano­r crime of violence.

Applicatio­ns can be obtained at the Safety Department or on the city’s website, www.oakwoodohi­o.gov. The deadline to register is Aug. 16.
