Senators introduce resolution condemning Dayton shooting

Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown, both of Ohio, on Monday introduced a resolution that condemns the August Oregon District mass shooting in which nine people were killed and 27 injured.

The resolution also expresses support for everyone who was impacted by the shooting and gratitude to first responders, according to a press release.

“The senseless and evil actions of one individual claimed the lives of nine innocent people in Dayton earlier this year,” Portman said in the release.

“We must stand together to condemn these cowardly acts.”

On the morning of Aug. 4, Connor Betts, 24, of Bellbrook opened fire in front of Ned Peppers Bar on East Fifth Street in the Oregon, but officers fatally shot him within a minute before he could enter the business, police have said. He was wearing a mask and bullet-proof vest, and carrying an AR-15 style weapon.

Among Betts’ victims was his sister Megan Betts, 22. The others killed were: Monica Brickhouse, 39; Nicholas Cumer, 25; Derrick Fudge, 57; Thomas McNichols, 25; Lois Oglesby, 27;

Saheed Saleh, 38; Logan Turner, 30; and Beatrice Warren Curtis, 36.

“There is no reason one man should have been able to kill nine people in Dayton and injure dozens more in less than a minute – and if it weren’t for the brave first responders from the Dayton Police Department, far more lives could have been lost,” Brown said in the release. “We must honor the lives of those who were slain and continue to offer support to their loved ones and the Dayton community as we work to end senseless gun violence.”
