Top developer building homes in Trotwood

D.R. Horton, the largest U.S. homebuilder by volume since 2002, broke ground Oct. 17 on a model lot at 5976 Hillary St.

A home builder is planning to develop new houses in Trotwood.

Homebuilder D.R. Horton bought about 50 parcels of land in the city this summer and broke ground Oct. 17 on a model lot at 5976 Hillary St., off East Westbrook Road.

“Multi-million dollar privately funded development projects like Wolf Creek Run significantly impact our community’s bottom line and help galvanize its growth. I look forward to working with D.R. Horton,” said Trotwood City Manager Quincy Pope in a press release.

Mayor Mary McDonald said “we are making great strides in economic development and recovering from the Great Recession. This is another piece of the renaissance of our great city.”

The new home plans will start in the low $160,000s and have four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms and about 1,911 square feet of living space. There will be other plans that range from 1,260 to 2,460 square feet with both ranch and two-story designs.

D.R. Horton has a presence in 29 states and is the largest U.S. builder by volume since 2002.

Last month, a different home developer, G.F. Bailey, announced plans to begin building homes in Trotwood designed to withstand tornado-speed winds less than two miles from the path of the EF4 tornado that wreaked havoc on the community earlier this year.

The homes will be built in the Sycamore Woods development. The first four will feature three bedrooms, two baths, a two-car attached garage and 1,200 square feet of living space and used as models until they’re sold.
