Goodbye to a fallen officer, with gratitude

Mayor Nan Whaley’s remarks at the Nov. 12 funeral of Detective Jorge R. Del Rio conveyed Dayton’s deep appreciation of his service and sacrifice:

2019 has been a very challenging year for the Dayton community. Between the hate group rally Memorial Day weekend, the tornadoes the following Monday, and the Oregon District shooting in August, this year has put great strain on our first responders.

And yet, you all have risen to the task time and time again.

Often with little personal recognition, Dayton Police keep our community safe during times of crisis and times of calm. Each day, we ask our first responders to put their lives on the line. And each day, you do.

Detective Jorge Del Rio exemplified this spirit. Seeking no recognition, he worked to keep dangerous drugs off Dayton’s streets. Never personally in the spotlight, he was crucial in combating the epidemic of illicit drugs that have so challenged our community.

Although Detective Del Rio was unknown to many of those he served, he was hardly anonymous among those he served alongside. This last week, I’ve heard many stories of his kindness and humility from his colleagues in Dayton Police.

As is clear here today, the bond between law enforcement officers is incredibly strong. As a nearly 30-year veteran of the Dayton Police Department, Detective Del Rio held an important place within the organization.

To Detective Del Rio’s family, particularly his wife Kathy, his daughters and his granddaughters — please know that Dayton’s hearts are with you.

The sacrifice you have made to protect the lives of others is extraordinary. It can never fully be repaid. It is a sacrifice Daytonians are forever grateful for.
