Online courses for free

Learn coding and web developer skills without ever leaving home, thanks to a free online learning tool from the Washington-Centervill­e Public Library.

More than 300 online courses and 250 online workshops are available to local citizens of all ages via Treehouse. Courses allow users to study at their own pace and provide additional learning opportunit­ies through quizzes and coding challenges. Treehouse offers citizens at-home (with a valid library card) or in-library access to a wide variety of courses. New courses are being added throughout the year for continued learning experience­s.

Here are just a few of the courses currently available:

■ Build a Simple iPhone App with Objective C

■ Introducti­on to HTML and CSS

■ Introducin­g JavaScript

■ Python Basics

■ Ruby Basics

■ Typography for Designers The Library currently subscribes to more than two dozen databases, like Treehouse, and extends access on to library users for free. All of the online databases to which the library subscribes are intended to assist people in their personal, school, or business research. Treehouse, with its numerous classes for personal and profession­al developmen­t, is of special benefit to those looking to build skills to help make them more employable.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program that provides eligible Ohioans assistance with their home energy bills. This onetime benefit is applied directly to the customer’s utility bill or bulk fuel bill.

Ohioans with a household income at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for the program. For households with more than 8 members, add $7,735 for each additional member.

A household applying for HEAP must report total gross household income for the past 30 days (12 months preferred) for all members, except wage or salary income earned by dependent minors under 18 years old. Both homeowners and renters are eligible for assistance.

You can begin your applicatio­n online at energyhelp.ohio. gov, but will need to complete the applicatio­n at your local Energy Assistance Provider. When you apply, you will need to complete the Energy Assistance Applicatio­n (English or Spanish) and submit a copy of the following documents:

■ A copy of your most recent utility bills

■ A list of all household members (include birth dates and Social Security numbers) and proof of income for the last 30 days for each member (12 months preferred)

■ Proof of citizenshi­p or legal residency for all household members.

Please contact your local Energy Assistance Provider for a list of all required documents. Depending on your income type, additional forms may be required.
