Earth Day celebrates 50 years
It’s never too soon to look forward to big anniversaries, right? This item came from the Los Angeles Times:
“Environmentalists will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020. The annual event began April 22, 1970, when an unprecedented 20 million turned out for what was billed as a nationwide teach-in on issues like pollution and pesticides. Today, it’s credited with launching the modern environmental movement and paving the way for landmark U.S. laws like the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.
“(But) the threats are more dire now. Climate change, deforestation and plastic pollution endanger ecosystems and societies. In response, organizers of Earth Day 2020 are planning massive cleanup efforts and tree plantings throughout the year (and) a joint campaign with youth activists to push for stronger climate action.”
