Talk on barriers to voting

Join Wright Library and Dianne Herman of the League of Women Voters for a presentation and Q&A on the barriers, historical and current, which affect who votes in our country. This event, which will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday is presented in conjunction with the Choosing to Participate exhibit currently available through the library.

From the founding of our nation, when only white males with property were allowed to vote, to the broadening of the franchise to include white women in 1920 and then black citizens in 1965, to today, when issues of voter identification laws, dark money in politics, gerrymandering, voter roll purges, access to the polls, and voter apathy and cynicism are debated, how do we understand barriers to voting in the United States? These topics will be explored as we seek to understand how our democracy works today and what reforms, if any, should we undertake to, as our founders stated, form a more perfect union.

Dianne Herman is the Coordinator of the Speakers Bureau for the League of Women Voters of the Greater Dayton Area. She is a retired social worker and also was a part-time instructor for several years at Sinclair Community College, where she taught classes in the sociology department.
