We’ve all received a holiday gift we didn’t quite like. Whether you received something you already own or something you simply don’t want, you may be looking to return it.

Or maybe you like the item, but it doesn’t quite fit or it’s the wrong color.

You are not alone.

It’s important to remember stores aren’t legally required to accept exchanges or give refunds, unless the merchandise was defective or misrepresented. While most retailers do offer refund and exchange programs, policies vary greatly.

This year, make returns and exchanges hassle-free. More than ever, it’s important to avoid crowded stores and long waits indoors. The day after Christmas is one of the busiest return and exchange days.

The Better Business Bureau offers these tips:

■ Understand store policies about returns and exchanges.

These can usually be found on the store websites, signage or on the back of your receipt. Some stores provide refunds, while others only offer store credit. Some stores may not offer anything. Ask about exceptions, such as sale items or intimate apparel.

■ Read through the seller’s return policy before buying online. Find out if they accept returns or exchanges and who pays the shipping.

■ Be wary shopping at seasonal stores. Ask if they will be open after the holiday, how long they plan to stay open and if they will accept returns after the holidays.

■ You may have to pay a restocking fee to return electronics or opened items.

■ Pick a time when the store is not likely to be crowded. Early morning or late evenings tend to be less crowded.

■ Keep receipts and gift receipts, as it makes the process go faster and you’re more likely to get a full refund.

■ Get the details on a product’s warranty. Most electronics and home appliances come with warranties that are to be fulfilled with the manufacturer, not the retailer.

■ Don’t forget your ID. Some stores require it for returns.

■ Keep in mind that if you use the item, it’s less likely a store will accept your return.

■ Understand many retailers have changed their policies for the holiday season and the COVID-19 pandemic.

■ Remember electronics may need to be returned faster than other items. Most electronics stores offer short windows.

■ Check out the app ShopSavvy if you’re not sure where a gift was purchased. You can just scan the barcode and the app will bring up a list of stores.
