Greene A giving milestone

‘Donor for Life’

Xenia donor Gene Glover now has a new “Donor for Life – 150 LTD” fleece blanket, but he might have a tug-of-war on his hands. Community Blood Center celebrated Gene’s 150th donation Jan. 15 at the Dayton CBC with the super-soft and fuzzy gift, but Gene’s wife Wendy was nearby making her 79th lifetime donation, and she had her eyes on it.

“I’ll share it with him!” said a laughing Wendy, who will reach the “10 Gallon” milestone when she makes her 80th donation. But the day belonged to Gene for his 150th lifetime donation achievement.

“I started donating in the early 80s,” Gene said. “I worked for

the Dayton Daily News on the second shift. If we walked in and weren’t busy, they’d let us come down here and donate blood. There was about five of us. It was a nice perk!”

Don worked for the Dayton Daily News for 32 years and retired 10 years ago.

“I just kept donating,” he said. “We moved to Kettering and I kept coming down here and doing it.”

Gene has been averaging five or more donations per year for decades. He made six donations in 2020 and started the New Year with his 150th. Gene and Wendy now live in the Xenia area, but continue to donate at the downtown CBC Donation Center.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically. Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org. Make an appointment at www.DonorTime.com or call 937-461-3220.
