Education Foundation awards grants

The Centervill­e Education Foundation recently awarded 12 grants, worth $5,400, to teachers in Centervill­e City Schools to use for classroom projects in the coming months. Recipients include:

■ Meryl Matthews, Catherine Tsatalis and Meredith Florkey, Primary Village North, “Literacy, Math and Science in the Woods, Oh My!”

■ Leanne Alldred and Kaitlyn Kownick, Primary Village South, “Growing Readers”

■ Sarina Alesi, Lisa Thompson, Nikki Hoff, Taylor Mackell, Jackie Vollmer, Lauren Bridgens and Amanda McCormick, Driscoll Elementary, “Driscoll Second-Grade Super Readers Challenge”

■ Tish Kemp, Kelly Gartz, Katie Combs, Jessica Sanders, Summer Shaffer and Heather Price, Driscoll Elementary, “Home-A-Rama”

■ Christi Woods, Normandy Elementary, “Podcast Screen Divider”

■ Rachel Hatton, Normandy Elementary, “From ‘Farm’ to Table”

■ Julie Shisler, Amy Goheen and Susan Jones, Stingley Elementary, “All are Welcome Here Library”

■ Stephanie Carder, Stingley Elementary, “Picture-Perfect STEM”

■ Trent Green, Lynn Dawson, Stephanie Wiedle and Pamela Jarrells, Magsig Middle School, “Sensory Tools/Room”

■ Mary Frances Downs, Magsig Middle School, “Etch A Sketch, No WiFi Needed”

■ Nicole Mick, Watts Middle School, “Cupcake Wars”

■ Lisa West, Heather Winkler, Kristen Johnson, Lisa Ernest, Debbie Priest and Heather Lopez, Centervill­e High School, “La Biblioteca Móvil: The Mobile Spanish Library”

Funds to support these teacher grants were donated by generous community members, parents, students and Centervill­e alumni. In addition, this year the Centervill­e Noon Optimist Club made a $2,500 donation toward this program.

Grant applicatio­ns were reviewed by a committee of teachers and Centervill­e Education Foundation members earlier this month, and recipients were recognized at the Centervill­e Board of Education meeting on Jan. 24.
