Nature, 8 PM on Ch. 16 and Ch. 48: Actor Bill Pullman narrates “American Horses,” a fascinatin­g history of unique American horse breeds — including the mustang, Appaloosa, Morgan and quarter horse — that helped shape the nation and the people who continue the tradition of caring for them. The origin story of American horses can be traced back to the 50-million-yearold fossil beds in Polecat Bench, Wyo. After those ancient beginnings, the horse spread around the globe, but vanished from North America until being reintroduc­ed by Spanish explorers.

Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches, 9 PM on HBO:

Five notable Black actors give voice to the words of one of America’s most famous abolitioni­sts in this new one-hour documentar­y executive produced by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography “Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom.” Denzel Whitaker (“The Great Debaters”), Nicole Beharie (“Sleepy Hollow”), Colman Domingo (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Jonathan Majors (“Lovecraft Country”) and Jeffrey Wright (“Westworld”) perform texts taken from five of Douglass’s most celebrated speeches on racial injustice, which still resonate today.
