Senior awarded scholarships

- Contributed

Northmont senior Janelle Tipton has recently been awarded two scholarships in recognition of her accomplishments.

The $1,000 Franklin B. Walter Scholarship is provided by the Montgomery County Educational Service Center and is named in honor of the longtime state superintendent who served between 1977 and 1991. Students across the county were nominated by their district and the criteria includes student awards, GPA, activities and attendance. Students wrote an essay about a teacher who has positively impacted their lives. That teacher received $500 to spend on classroom resources and materials. Janelle chose Angie Hawkins as her teacher of influence. Mrs. Hawkins is Janelle’s mentor teacher as part of the Northmont Teacher Academy, which is a class that

exposes and encourages students to follow a path in the field of education.

The “You Can Count on Me Scholarship” will be awarded by McAfee Heating and Air on May 4. For

that award, Janelle nominated math teacher Julie Marshall as a teacher who supported and impacted her education. Mrs. Marshall will receive a $250 classroom award.
