It’s time for the Run for the Roses again, as the 148th Kentucky Derby kicks off today at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. — and serves as the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. Sometimes labeled as the “most exciting two minutes in sports,” the race is run by threeyear-old Thoroughbreds who sprint 1-1/4 miles.

The 2021 race became mired in controversy when jockey John Velazquez rode the Bob Baffert-trained Medina Spirit to victory. But months later, Mandaloun was awarded the win after Medina Spirit tested positive for a steroid.
