Springboro hires former Franklin coach

Springboro High School announced the hiring of Brian Bales as boys basketball coach Friday. He will be introduced at an event Monday at 7 p.m. in the high school library.

Bales, a 1995 Franklin High School graduate, spent the last 15 seasons as coach at his alma mater and resigned Feb. 28, three days after a 19-5 season. At Springboro, he replaces Brett Kostoff, who resigned for personal reasons Feb. 3 after two seasons.

Springboro finished 9-15 last season. Its roster includes RJ Greer, who aver

aged 15.3 points as a freshman and has received scholarshi­p offers from Florida, New Mexico State and other

schools.

Bales had a record of 267120 at Franklin. His teams won 10 Southwest Buckeye

League championsh­ips. He was the Associated Press Division II coach of the year in 2012 and 2015, when one of the nation’s top recruits, Luke Kennard, was a senior.

Kennard finished his fifth season in the NBA and his second with the Los Angeles Clippers in April.

Earlier in his career, Bales was head coach at Miamisburg (2005-07) after serving two seasons as an assistant there.

He also coached Miami University Hamilton from 2003-05 had a 54-9 record in two seasons.

Bales will work at Springboro as the district’s coordinato­r of behavior and interventi­on services.
