City has plenty to celebrate this month

- By John Agenbroad Springboro Mayor

We have much to celebrate this month. To all those graduating, we wish you much success in your next venture. Congratulations on achieving this important milestone.

May is also the month we recognize service and sacrifice as we thank those public employees who keep our community safe, clean and running smoothly. May 15–21 we celebrate National Police Week and National Public Works Week.

During National Police Week, we honor all those who protect and serve, and pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Springboro Police Officer Bill Johnson was killed on duty by a drunk driver in 1983. Each year, a memorial wreath is placed on a cruiser in his memory.

Springboro is fortunate to have 30 sworn officers and staff led by Chief Jeff Kruithoff. They set an example of honesty, integrity and respect for others. These dedicated officers work with our citizens and businesses to provide a safe and secure community, and we thank them for their service.

National Public Works Week recognizes the contributions of the hard-working folks who take care of many of the amenities and services that make our community so special. Our Springboro Public Service crews maintain streets, storm drains, parks and restrooms, clear snow, pick up leaves, fix potholes and provide water service. Hats off to our Service Department!

Memorial Day is May 30, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. We are forever grateful for all those who served in our armed forces. Thank you for keeping America the land of the free and the home of the brave. I hope you can join us at our annual Memorial Day parade beginning at 2 p.m. May 30 on S. Main Street.

Finally, I thank all of our mothers — these wonderful women have sacrificed and served all of us! There is no love like a mother’s love, and we appreciate all you do.

Whatever you may celebrate this month, enjoy this time with your family and friends.
