- STAFF REPORTS

A Middletown woman accused of shooting and killing her sister in December 2021 has been declared competent to stand trial, to take place in September.

Monica Ann Pennington, 49, was charged with murder and felonious assault in the death of her sister Pamela Pennington, 52, on Oct. 20, 2021.

Police found Pamela dead on the floor of the living room after Monica called 911, police said.

Following a psychological evaluation, on Dec. 2 Pennington was ruled incompetent to stand trial, which refers to her ability to assist in her own defense and understand the charges against her at the time she was charged.

On Thursday, she was found competent following treatment, and her defense attorney enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, for which Pennington will undergo another evaluation.

She is scheduled to be back in court June 23.
