IN BRIEF: HUBER HEIGHTS
Future health care professionals earn awards
In February, 10 members of the Wayne High School HOSA-Future Health Professionals organization were selected to compete in a skills session at the organization’s regional Competitive Events Leadership Conference at Sinclair Community College. The students displayed their knowledge in areas such as forensic science, CPR and first aid, and medical assisting.
Lauren Gregg, Destiny Ferguson, Winter Heslin, Caelynn Watkins, and Myana Sanford were named regional finalists during the event, while Sabrina Roddy, Andrea Gomez-Senquiz, Ana Gibson, Riley Duvall, and Jayvaun Butler qualified to move on to compete in the HOSA State Leadership Conference in Toledo in April.
To help meet the need for highly qualified healthcare professionals and leaders, HOSA offers opportunities for future health professionals to gain valuable skills that go beyond what is learned in the classroom. Through social activities, hands-on learning, team-building, and friendly competition, members are able to make a seamless transition from classroom to career.
Valley Forge has two ‘Honored Artists’
Valley Forge Elementary sixth grader, Breanna Tran, and fourth grader, Geordan Carter, were selected as “the honored artists” of the 44th Annual Youth Art Month and Young People’s Art Exhibition sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA). This year’s show includes 115 works of art from students throughout the state. Visual arts teacher, Kathryn Nugent, had this to say about Breanna and Geordan, “they are amazing artists who are talented and always go above and beyond. They take extra work home and practice, but it’s not just about being good. They really try; they really care.”
Breanna created a pen and ink drawing of a crane flying over a koi pond with accents of colored pencil. Her work focused on different pen and ink techniques like line weight and implied textures. Breanna’s main focus was to showcase the use of flowy and detailed lines to create beautiful images. Geordan created an oil pastel drawing of pumpkins at night. He focused on using the moon as a light source to add shadows and highlights to his pumpkins then blended the pastel to make a smooth transition. Geordan also wanted to show his knowledge of perspective by providing depth to the artwork by drawing the pumpkins in the foreground larger and more detailed as the viewer’s eye moves back into the drawing they get smaller and less detailed.
Congratulations to these young artists. Both were honored at the OAEA reception in Columbus on March 2.
