Sometimes in life, we all just need to dance

- Anne Mount

My weekends are not always this busy, but when they are, look out.

On Friday, I went with my daughter and granddaughter to a make-up music class. The studio was decorated in lady bugs with cute little lady bug rugs, which we sat on. There were about 10 adorable 2-year-olds all sitting in their mothers’ laps.

The teacher came out with her guitar and started singing such kids’ songs as “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” and “Bingo.” Immediately, my granddaughter gets up and starts dancing. I get up and start dancing with her.

Pretty soon everyone was dancing with assorted scarves, tambourines, Maracas! It was a blast.

I forgot how much fun being a “kid” was.

That night, two girlfriends and I went to hear a friend’s band, “Heartless,” at Lone Wolf Brewery nearby. My friend, Diana Drake, who used to open for many famous artists in Las Vegas, belted out our favorite rock ‘n’ roll songs like Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” and Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking.”

We, of course, had to get out on the dance floor, with many other people, and dance. I forgot how much fun it was to be a teenager again.

On Saturday night, several of us went to a restaurant and watched some amazing couples dance to “Cotton-Eyed Joe” and “Swimming Upstream, with dance moves such as “The Pretzel.” We tried some line dancing and had so much fun. How I lived in Texas for years and did not learn the

“Electric Slide” is beyond me. Oh, wait a minute. I was a taxi driver for my two adolescents then.

Well, it sure felt good to feel 40 again.

So, whether you go to a music class, or to a restaurant with a great band and dance floor, or just have a dance party in your living room, get out there! Dance your legs off! Move whatever still moves. Shake, but not too much, whatever still shakes.

Dancing to great music is the “real” fountain of youth, and we are not done yet. Anne Mount is a Dayton native and award-winning journalist, author and screenwriter.
