New animal shelter nearing open house

- By ERIC MANN

The new Adams County animal shelter is almost ready for operation – in a more centrally-located place.

The current longtime shelter has been in the rural Monroe area, run very capably, humanely, and efficiently for perhaps 20 years by Charlie and Carol Bowers.

The next shelter – in a new building with pens for 20 dogs and 20 cats – is just a halfmile north of Monroe, right on US 27, beside Heiser Automotive.

The address is 1250N US 27, the home of Mike and Cindy Heiser.

An open house will be scheduled soon, they say.

The animals are expected to be moved from the Bowers site to the Heiser location on May 6, as the Heisers reported to the county commissioners at their May 4 meeting.

Cindy Heiser said anyone interested in adopting a pet or reporting a lost pet should call the couple at 1-260-849-0300.

The new shelter will have these hours Mondays through

Fridays: 10 a. m.noon and 5- 7 p. m. The Heisers will also open on weekends by appointment only.

The agreement the couple signed with the county allows them to charge up to $150 per animal to get a pet, with medical care perhaps involved for some animals.

Commissioner Stan Stoppenhagen said the new shelter has “a viewing and interaction area” for prospective pet purchasers.
