Landon Hummer working to join Decatur Fire Department
The Decatur Fire Department is one step away from adding a new full-time firefighter.
Landon Hummer, a 2013 Bellmont High School graduate, received city council’s approval on May 3 and now needs only to pass his PERF physical exam to become a fulltime Decatur firefighter.
The Public Employee Retirement Fund exam was scheduled for May 9.
Hummer will fill the department vacancy created by the recent retirement of Les Marckel, who was replaced by new Chief Jeff Sheets.
Hummer would become the 11th full-time member of a department which has approximately 24 volunteers.
“I’m really looking forward to going full-time and thankful I got the position,” Landon told the Daily Democrat.
“Firefighting is something I’ve always wanted to do; I worked hard to get here and plan to continue working hard.”
An eight-year employee of Smith Brothers in Berne, Hummer was a volunteer firefighters with the Berne FD for three years and has served as a volunteer with the Decatur FD for the past nine months.
