City police seeking reserve officers
The Decatur Police Department is now accepting applications for police reserves, according to an announcement by Police Chief Leonard Corral Jr..
The reserves department currently has three reserve officers: Captain John Summers, Andy Smith, and Andrew Wolfe. However, Wolfe will soon be resigning due to recently being hired by Berne Police
Department as its newest officer.
DPD’s Police Reserve Officer Program consists of unpaid, certified volunteer officers, whose primary purpose is to provide additional manpower to the fulltime department, Corral said.
Additionally, the reserve officer program expands available police services and increases citizen participation in department activities, he continued.
“Being on a police reserve officer program benefits a person with training and experience if they would ever want to seek a job as a full-time police officer.” Corral continued. “A reserve officer would have to do the same amount of mandated training hours as a fulltime officer.”
Several officers currently on the Decatur department were the product of the reserve officer program, including Corral, Sgt. Mark Cook, and Det. Kevin L. Gerber.
Anyone with questions, Corral said, should contact him or Deputy Chief Chris Brite at (260) 724-8646. Applicants must:
Be a U.S. Citizen Possess a valid driver’s license
Be at least 21 years of age by date of application and not have reached 40 years of age by date of appointment
Have no felony convictions
Be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
Applications may be picked up at the police station, MondayFriday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Applications can also be printed from the police department website www. decaturinpolice. com.
