-

Adams Memorial Hospital will be offering Diabetes Prevention Classes in both the spring and the fall with the spring class tentatively planned to start on Wednesday, March 8 , while the fall class is slated for September.

The classes will take place at Adams Memorial Hospital in Conference Room D, previously the Geneva Room. Pending response, the sessions will continue weekly on Wednesdays from noon-1:30 p.m, or the most popular times requested. To register, call Lisa McAfee, RN and Diabetes Educator and Life Coach at 260724-2145 x11107.

Of the 41 hospitals that offer Diabetes Prevention Programs in Indiana, Adams Memorial Hospital is just one of 12 hospitals that is fully recognized in the state of Indiana by the CDC.

The class is beneficial for persons with prediabetes or other risk factors for type 2 diabetes. “Prevent Type 2 Diabetes” is part of a National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and features an approach that is proven to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. By improving food choices and increasing physical activity, persons can lose five to seven percent of their body weight as well as cutting their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. Prediabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes.

Statistics show one out of three American adults have prediabetes, and most of them do not know it!

Having prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. This raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Without weight loss or moderate physical activity, many people with prediabetes can develop type 2 diabetes within five years.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of toes, feet, or legs. The lifestyle changes made in the prevention program will help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Hospital officials noted several individuals completed the most recent course including Barb Dicke, Michael Sutton, Kendra Schlemmer, and Christen McCormick. “Their message is “the time and effort are more than worth it, We prevented type two diabetes and so can you!”
