Sign Stealer strikes again
It has been nearly two months since an unknown individual/group stole fourteen traffic signs from their County Road posts, but it was reported by Highway Superintendent Brad Yoder that whoever it was is doing it again. This time around, there were about five traffic signs that were taken from the area near County Road East 300 North and Salem Road. While the last time the thief was able to go right down the road taking signs at will, some changes to the signs was able to prevent the bolts from being loosened.
“We have used a specialty nut that you can’t just take off and they are working. There were a couple that they tried to get and since it was locked, when the first bolt was broken the sign just swung down and they did not get it. So we are taking some measures to try to help prevent this.”
The news of the thefts were again met with shaking heads and frustration from the Board of Commissioners. Yoder announced again that the Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the incident. It was noted that no stop signs were among the stolen government property, and that arrow signs were most commonly taken.
In Indiana, those who steal signs can be charged with a Class A Misdemeanor or a Felony depending on the value of the signs that were taken. This is punishable with up to a year in prison and a $5,000 fine again dependent on the exact value of the property. Furthermore, if it is determined that the theft of street signs have directly been involved with a traffic incident that leads to an individual being hurt, the thief could face harsher punishments. A death could result in manslaughter.
The signs are currently being replaced by the Adams County Highway Department. The next Adams County Board of Commissioners meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 31st at 10:00 a.m.
