BERNE—For South Adams fans Tuesday night, the win was nice—a 55-24 home-court blowout by the Starfires over Churubusco— but the real excitement came almost midway through the first quarter when senior star Peyton Pries caught Cora Baker’s outlet pass and drove hard to the basket for a layup.

It looked like an ordinary layup, one of probably hundreds that Pries has made in her career, but in fact it was extraordinary. It put the four-year starter over the 1,000-point career milestone, an achievement claimed by only three previous girls in South Adams history—Lexi Dellinger,

Athena Sherwood, and Amy Meyer.

Officials stopped the game for a brief ceremony, during which the Starfire fans cheered enthusiastically as athletic director Jason Arnold presented Pries with the game ball and a special black, gold, and white commemorative basketball.

Pries was especially grateful that she accomplished the feat with her sister, Macy, on the floor with her, as she has been for the past three seasons. “It just feels great that she could be with me by my side and that we can help each other,” Peyton said after the game.

The layup, Peyton’s second of the game, came at the 4:32 mark and gave the Starfires (12-10) a 6-0 lead.
