Tax aides coming to APLS services
The Adams Public Library System once again is offering a resource to those in need of financial assistance come tax season. Aides from the American Association of Retired Persons will be in the Library to offer tax return help. These appointments will be held weekly on Tuesday’s beginning on January 31st.
The organization has been working with the library for over a decade, and has expanded their audience throughout the years. Library System Director Kelly Ehinger explained that originally the services were intended for the elderly population with low incomes, but now the service takes in nearly all customers. It is estimated that 500-700 people take advantage of the services each year, from both Adams and the neighboring counties. One of the only stipulations that the service has is that the returns do not involve more complicated elements, such as royalties or self employment.
To meet with one of these aides, appointments can be scheduled in advance by calling the library, or by visiting a link at tax appointment.aarp.org. The full link will be published on the Decatur Daily Democrat website. The preparers would like people to bring last year’s tax return, all documents, a photo ID and a social security card to the meetings. It is expected that individuals arrive a few minutes prior to their appointments. The appointments will last approximately 45 minutes.
Additionally, the Library has a Legal Help Kiosk that adds to their adult services and will offer free assistance and direction to those who have questions. Through Indiana Legal Help, the Kiosk can connect individuals’ to legal organizations and includes housing resources.
The Kiosk as well as registration for tax return help will be available for use while the Library is open, which typically is Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m, Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about the Adams Public Library System and their adult services, contact 260-724-2605.
