Robert E. “Bob” Shoemaker, 93, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Bickford of Wabash Assisted Living. He was born in Fulton County, Indiana, on November 29, 1929, the son of the late Russell C. and Nancy M. (Bowen) Shoemaker. On May 28, 1966, he married Alice E. Roth and she preceded him in death on July 29, 2019.

He was a 1947 graduate of Akron High School and attended Manchester College. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Science from Purdue University and then went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Kansas State.

Bob was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. He was also in the Chi-Rho Sunday School Class. He served his country in the United States Army and had a tour of duty in the Korean War.

He was a lifelong farmer and avid gardener. He taught Science first at Monmouth and then at Bellmont and after 37 years he retired in May of 1992.

Bob served 2 terms for the Cross Creek Associatio­n and was involved in Men’s Fellowship. He was a member of the American Legion Adams Post 43. He was a 50-year member of the Lions Club.

He is survived by a brother, Jerry (Diana) Shoemaker of Akron, IN; a sister, Kathleen Racer of Rochester, IN; several nieces and nephews; 2 special nieces, Judy Sipes & Cheryl Larson; a good friend, Cathy Plasterer.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Alice E. Shoemaker; a brother, Jack Shoemaker; a sister, Beulah Conner.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, 225 W. Adams Street, Decatur, IN. Visitation will be one hour before the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Randy Rossman will be officiatin­g and burial will follow in M.R.E. Cemetery in Berne, IN. Military Graveside Rites will be rendered by the American Legion Post 43 Color Guard.

Memorials may be given to Zion United Church of Christ or the Lions Club.
