Decatur Police Chief Leonard Corral Jr. announced on Facebook shortly before noon Tuesday that he is resigning his position.

He will be exiting the police department effective March 3 to take a new position at Adams Memorial Hospital.

Corral was sworn in as chief on December 26, 2017, having been picked by then-mayor Ken Meyer to replace the retiring chief Greg Cook.

Following is the statement posted on Facebook by Corral:

“They say all good things must come to an end … well it’s my turn.

“Yesterday (Monday), I met with Mayor Dan Rickord and gave him my letter of intent to retire from the police department. March 3, 2023 will be my last day at Decatur PD.

“I accepted a position at Adams Memorial Hospital as Hospital Public Safety Officer.

“This was not an easy decision. I love being a Police Officer, but I felt the time was right to make a change.

“I am proud of all of my accomplishments as Chief of Police, but my biggest ones would be the Take Home Car program, more new updated training and adding more Police Instructors on the department.

“I had an incredible journey in my 29 years at DPD. When I leave on

that last day I will leave with my head held high knowing I did everything to the best of my ability and I gave it my all. “More to come later. “Peace & Love.” Corral began his career in law enforcement as a jail officer at the Adams County Jail in 1992. In 1993, he joined the Decatur Police Department’s reserve officer program. He became a full time patrolman with the department in August of 1994.

He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2008 and in 2011 became a lieutenant detective.
