Sign Stealer still sought

- JUSTIN AYRES

The reoccurring theft of traffic signs continues to antagonize the Highway Department as it was revealed that the person/persons responsible for the continuous crime was at work over the weekend. Not only did they take more of the signs, but they are beginning to leave their main area of operation. Superintendent Brad Yoder explained that while the signs are typically stolen near Salem Road and County Road East 300 North, all of this weekend’s signs were stolen from a different area. Yoder continued to say that the Department looked and tallied the total amount of signs that they have replaced, and the number that they came up with was 47 stolen street signs.

“We told our guys to really keep an eye on stuff, especially Monday morning when they go out and drive through that area,” said Yoder. “They did and found more that had been taken. They are still out staying out east, but they actually jumped north of 124. I want to make sure everyone is aware. I want it out there that if you see something, please let somebody know.”

Yoder reiterated that despite the large quantity of stolen property, the strong majority of the signs are the standard directional chevron. He expressed gratitude that there has not been any accidents or injuries related to the theft, though there is still concern for an unfortunate situation if the theft continues.

“Somebody could still blow through a curve at night that they do not see coming,” he continued. “I just want it out there that this is still going on and I think that we would love some tips about what is really going on.”

It seems as though the perpetrator(s) are primarily acting at night on the weekends. With the new release of the total number of stolen signs, it can be estimated that the amount of stolen government property has eclipsed $3,000, which could result in anywhere from six months to a max of two and a half years

in prison according to Indiana code.
