Braves, Knights deadlocked before game gets suspended

- Matthew Klingenberger Sports Reporter Decatur Daily Democrat

The Bellmont Braves and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Knights were tied 1-1 on Wednesday night when rain forced their game to be stopped.

Bellmont pitcher Layne LeMaster got off to a good start when he retired the side in order in the top of the first.

The Braves posted the first run of the contest when a Beau Baker base hit scored Andrew James. James reached base with a lead-off double. He progressed to third on a sacrifice fly out.

The visitors put a pair of runners on base courtesy of two second-inning singles, but Bellmont made sure those runners did not score, stranding them at the end of the inning.

Bishop Luers pulled level in the third.

Jaden Mays lined a oneout double to left field before stealing third. He scored the first run of the evening for the Knights on a passed ball.

Mason West doubled for the Knights in the top of the fourth, but the inning ended with West still in scoring position.

Baker started the home portion of the fourth with a single. He moved up a base when Dylan Velez drew a walk. Similar to the prior half-inning, the lead runner was left stranded at second.

Unlike when the Knights batted, though, the inning ended for the Braves as a result of the rain that passed through the area Wednesday.

As of the time of writing, the game has not been rescheduled. If the contest does resume where it left off, the Braves will have runners on second and first with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and the score tied at one. Inclement weather on Thursday forced a cancellation of another Bellmont home game. The Braves were scheduled to host Fort Wayne Homestead. The next opportunity for Bellmont to pick up its first victory of the young campaign will come on Monday night at Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian. It will be the Braves versus the Braves at 5:30.

April 23rd is when Bellmont will play at home next. Columbia City will be in Decatur on that occasion.
