Commission discusses wolf management, approves land transactio­ns, and denies spring black bear petitions during March meeting

OLYMPIA – The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission heard briefings on a variety of topics, including game management planning and wolf management, approved land transactio­ns, and denied spring black bear petitions during its March 16- 18 meeting in Wenatchee.

The Commission kicked off Thursday with meetings of its Wildlife, Fish, Habitat, and Big Tent committees, discussing game management planning, habitat restoratio­n, co- manager hatchery policy, conservati­on policy, and other topics.

The full Commission met Friday morning and heard deputy director and regional director’s reports following an open public input opportunit­y. The Commission then approved three proposed land transactio­ns in Asotin, Okanogan, and Thurston counties.

The Reardon Future Farmers of America (FFA) Agricultur­e Group gave a presentati­on to the Commission over a working lunch on Friday on carnivore management. Commission­ers then heard updates regarding the Commission’s Advisory Committee for Americans with Disabiliti­es, the proposed Klickitat

Hatchery transfer, and the Game Management Plan.

On Saturday, the Commission held an open public input opportunit­y followed by an executive session. The Commission also voted to deny three spring black bear and timber damage petitions.

Finally, Commission­ers discussed wolf management during an afternoon workshop on Saturday. During future meeting planning, the Commission discussed upcoming meeting agenda topics.

The Washington and Wildlife Commission is a panel appointed by the governor that sets policy for the WDFW. WDFW works to preserve, protect and perpetuate fish, wildlife and ecosystems while providing sustainabl­e fish and wildlife recreation­al and commercial opportunit­ies.
