Brewery plans move into former building used by bank in Bath

- Jeff Murray

A brewing business that opened in Bath less than a year ago is already preparing to expand, and that growth will take place in a former downtown bank building which is under new ownership.

Village of Bath Mayor Michael Sweet announced local business owner and entrepreneur Brian Polmanteer is purchasing the former Bath National Bank property on Liberty and East William streets.

Polmanteer plans to occupy and refurbish the buildings and surrounding property in accordance with the village’s improvement plan, and that includes adding a new business to the existing tenants.

The property originally consisted of three buildings, including the bank and the former Babcock Theater, before the bank consolidated them into one.

Tub Town Brewing, a family-owned business that opened last December at 24-26 W. Steuben St. in Bath, plans to construct a new brewing and distribution facility on the East William Street parcel.

The space will house a state-of-theart brewing system, increase capacity, and allow distribution of all products currently available at the East Steuben Street location.

The brewery will also renovate the former bank building and teller area at 44 Liberty St. for expansion of a tap room and dining facility.

“We are hoping to add jobs to the local economy with this expansion,” said Mark Conrad of Tub Town Brewing.

“We were not expecting such a big turnout for our business,” Conrad said. “We’ve gotten a good reception from residents and from tourists.”

During renovations, Tub Town Brewing will continue to operate at the West Steuben Street location. Once the new space is complete, the business will look into other uses for the existing site, Conrad said.

According to Tub Town’s website, the business carries a variety of ales, seltzers, lagers, stouts and IPAs, along with a locally-sourced food menu.

Other tenants of the former bank complex include the Institute for Human Services and Arbor Housing and Development.

Both agencies will continue to occupy space in the building, and as part of the overall project, they will see improvements to building security, lighting, parking and office support.
