COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

- — Ryan Ford

Big Ten women

No. 19 Michigan 74, No. 24 Illinois 57:

Leigha Brown hit her first eight shots from the field for the host Wolverines en route to a teamhigh 27 points on 10-for-13 shooting. Brown didn’t miss until nearly halfway through the third quarter as the Wolverines held the Illini to just 22 points in the first half. Brown had 11 points in the second quarter alone, nearly matching the total for all Illinois players (13). The rest of the Wolverines weren’t nearly as efficient, however, making just 16 of 39 shots from the field. Maddie Nolan and Emily Kiser chipped in 10 points apiece with Kiser adding six rebounds and three assists. Leading scorer Laila Phelia (17 points per game) didn’t play for U-M due to a lower body injury. Next up, the Wolverines head to East Lansing to resume their rivalry with Michigan State at 3 p.m. Sunday; U-M beat MSU by 15 on Jan. 14.

Horizon men

Detroit Mercy 85, Cleveland State 67:

Antoine Davis entered Thursday’s home game needing 37.3 points a game the rest of the way to catch “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s

NCAA-record 3,667 career points. He’ll need to do a little better the rest of the way after putting up 35 points against the Vikings on 10-for-19 shooting, including 21 points in the first half. Rather than his usual M.O. of firing from beyond the 3-point line, Davis worked his way inside and reaped the benefit at the free throw line; he hit 10 of 11 shots from the stripe while making just three of six 3s. Gerald Liddell added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Titans (9-15, 5-8 Horizon), who continue their fourgame homestand with a visit from Purdue Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Purdue Fort Wayne 82, Oakland 73: The host Golden Grizzlies hit just one of 10 3-point tries in the first half, and the Mastodons piled on with an 8-0 run to open up the second half. It didn’t get much better in the second half, as OU went 3-for-19 beyond the arc after the intermission. Jalen Moore led the Golden Grizzlies with 28 points, thanks to a 12-for-12 mark from the free-throw line. Trey Townsend added 14 points and Blake Lampman added 12 points despite going just 1-for-12 on 3pointers. The Golden Grizzlies (9-15, 7-6 Horizon) will try to avoid a four-game losing streak as Cleveland State visits the O’rena at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Vikings beat OU by 16 back in December.
