With more dogs coming into the shelter rather than out, Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control is hosting an adoption event with the hopes of finding 30 dogs a new home in three hours.

“On any given day, there are more than 100 dogs in the Detroit shelter waiting desperately for a home,” according to a news release. “On any given week, 20-30 stray dogs come into the shelter which is already beyond capacity.”

30/3/30 Dog Adoption Event

The event is free, open to the public and takes places on April 30, which is National

Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. From noon to 3 p.m., the dogs and dog advocates will be at Canine to Five in Midtown, located at 3443 Cass Ave.

Attendees can meet and play with the dogs during the event. Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control volunteers will perform “adoption counseling to ensure good fits for each dog and adopter,” according to the news release. “Approved adopters can apply on-site and take their adopted dog home that day. There is a requested $100 adoption donation fee for dog adoptions.”

To adopt, you must be 18 years or older, have a valid ID and be able to answer questions about how you plan on caring for the dog.

Each dog is spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped, according to the shelter. Adopters will also be given dog food, treats, toys and a month’s worth of flea and tick treatments and heartworm preventive.

In the release, Dana Eldred, Executive Director of Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control, said the dogs up for adoption “are completely adoptable and completely compatible with living in a home and being a part of the family. National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is a great time for the community to rally around Detroit dogs and help us connect them with loving homes.”

If you don’t find the right dog for you during this adoption event, attendees are encouraged to visit the city shelter at 7401 Chrysler Drive, between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
