Tigers trade infielder Nick Maton to Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations
The Detroit Tigers have moved on from Nick Maton.
Maton, a utility player who doesn’t have any minor-league options remaining, was designated for assignment earlier this week to create room on the 40-man roster for a waiver claim, and on Wednesday night, the Tigers traded him to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations.
In 2023, Maton hit .173 with eight home runs, 38 walks and 73 strikeouts across 93 games with the Tigers. He was worth minuseight defensive runs saved at third base and minus-three defense runs saved base.
The trade involving Maton is the second trade between the Tigers and Orioles this offseason. In late January, the Tigers shipped Tyler Nevin, another out-of-options utility player who was designated for assignment, to the Orioles for cash considerations.
Maton turns 27 on Feb. 18.
He also spent 38 games in Triple-A Toledo last season, hitting .293 with three home runs, 27 walks and 37 strikeouts across 38 games. He played in the infield with the Tigers, primarily at third base, but worked at the corner outfield positions with the Mud Hens.
Maton has a .208 batting average with 15 home runs and a .306 on-base percentage in
at second his 179-game MLB career, which spans parts of three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and Tigers. He struggles to hit non-fastball pitches.
The Tigers acquired Maton from the Phillies in January 2023 and made him their primary third baseman, but that plan didn’t work out because of poor results on both offense and defense.
