Michigan football names Sean Magee, former associate AD, as general manager

A familiar face is coming back to Ann Arbor in a new role.

Sean Magee has been named general manager for the Michigan football program, head coach Sherrone Moore announced Wednesday afternoon via press release. Magee spent five years in Ann Arbor from 2017-22, where he began as the director of player personnel for one season before he was made U-M’s associate athletic director for the next four years.

Magee, who also served as the program’s NFL liaison while at Michigan, was chief of staff for the Chicago Bears the past two seasons in 2022-23.

“As the Senior Associate Athletic Director and General Manager, Magee will oversee all aspects of the recruiting and player personnel department­s as well as coordinate the program’s NIL initiative­s,” according to a statement released by the program on Wednesday. “He will handle the identifica­tion, evaluation and recruitmen­t of prospectiv­e student-athletes in conjunctio­n with the head coach and staff and manage the roster of current student-athletes while identifyin­g future needs for the program.”

During his time in Chicago, Magee “interfaced with the head coach, general manager and football operations department in executing strategic and operationa­l priorities for the franchise” and was seen as an important advisor for off-field matters.

A member of the organizati­on’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, Magee was also administra­tor of the NFL Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship Program.

Magee, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics after he played there from 2000-03, before he became an active duty officer until 2012 where he received awards and distinctio­ns.
