Michigan women’s golf star shoots 61 in tournament play

- — Tony Garcia

It’s officially Masters week and the Michigan women’s golf team is getting in on the action.

Monet Chun finished one shot off an NCAA record with a 61 (10-under) in the second round of the Chattanooga Classic at Council Fire in Tennessee. The senior became just the seventh women’s college golfer to shoot a 61 on record and the second since 2022; she now holds a onestroke lead over South Florida’s Melanie Green with one round to play.

In case Chun’s performance Monday wasn’t enough, Sydney Sung also shot a career-best 66 (5-under) to help U-M card a program record 271 (13 under par), propelling the team into a tie for the 36-hole lead at the Chattanooga Classic.

The only time a better individual score than Chun’s has been posted was last fall, when North Carolina State’s Lauren Olivares Leon set the record at 60 (11-under) in the first round of the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.

On Monday, Chun, from Richmond Hills, Ontario, made 11 birdies, six pars and a bogey on her day; the three-time All-Big Ten selection finished her round with eight birdies in the final 11 holes.

Chun was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2021, then in 2022 became the Wolverines’ second conference champion, winning the tournament by setting a program record for a 54-hole event (205).

That offseason, Chun finished as the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur runner-up just two weeks after she won the 2022 Canadian Women’s Amateur.

Chun is currently the lone senior on the roster and is averaging both a career- and team-best 72.29 strokes per round. In 37 career starts Chun has 19 top-20s, 10 top-10s and six top-fives — she has finished below par 29 times and even par 13 times in 113 rounds.
