Vegas, D Hanifin agree to eight-year, $58.8 million extension

The Vegas Golden Knights agreed to an eight-year, $58.8 million extension with defenseman Noah Hanifin on Thursday.

Hanifin was slated to become an unrestricted free agent following the season. Vegas acquired him from the Calgary Flames in a threeteam trade that also included the Philadelphia Flyers days before last month’s NHL trade deadline.

Hanifin, 27, has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 16 games with the Golden Knights.

Thursday’s games

Sabres 4, Capitals 2: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 22 saves and the host Sabres helped

dent Washington’s playoff hopes. The Caps began the night with a one-point lead over the Penguins and Red Wings for the second wildcard spot in the East.

Flyers 4, Rangers 1: Travis Konecny scored and added an assist as the visiting Flyers snapped an eight-game losing and moved to within one point in the race for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. New York star Artemi Panarin scored a five-on-three power-play goal to extend his points streak to 11 games.

Devils 6, Maple Leafs 5: Jesper Bratt scored his second goal of the third period at 18:46 and the visiting Devils survived two goals from Toronto’s Auston Matthews, who now has 68 this season. Bratt and Timo Meier each finished with two goals and an assist for the Devils.
