The in­surtech move­ment is ma­tur­ing quickly, to the point when vet­er­ans are find­ing new op­por­tu­ni­ties. Just a few years af­ter help­ing launch Amer­i­can Fam­ily Ven­tures, Nakatsuji struck out on his own with Clearcover, an auto in­sur­ance startup that aims to re­duce pre­mi­ums by as much as half by lever­ag­ing AI and other ad­vanced tech­nolo­gies and not spend­ing as much on ad­ver­tis­ing. The com­pany be­gan sell­ing poli­cies in Cal­i­for­nia this Fe­bru­ary and reached a $7.2 mil­lion pre­mium run rate in un­der 90 days. “It's ex­pen­sive to main­tain out­dated tech­nol­ogy, buy celebrity en­dorse­ments, run com­mer­cials, and send an end­less flow of junk mail,” Nakatsuji wrote in an­nounc­ing the launch.
