This large mo­saic art­work is a col­or­ful—and weath­er­proof— out­door fo­cal point, above. Break stained glass or ce­ramic pieces into bits us­ing a glass-cut­ting tool and sort by color. Sketch a de­sign onto a piece of ¼-inch ce­ment backer board (or down­load our bird de­sign at BHG.com/BirdArt). Work­ing in one 6-inch sec­tion at a time, ap­ply tile ad­he­sive with a notched trowel. Ar­range the mo­saic pieces on the glue, leav­ing very small gaps be­tween them, left. Re­peat un­til your de­sign is com­plete. Al­low to dry 24 hours. Chip away ex­cess ad­he­sive on the face of the tiles. Gen­tly push grout into the spa­ces be­tween the tiles us­ing a grout float. Wipe away ex­cess grout with a damp sponge as you work (it dries quickly). Thor­oughly clean the com­pleted sur­face with a damp sponge, then wipe with a dry cloth. Ap­ply sealant fol­low­ing man­u­fac­turer’s in­struc­tions.
