LOVE OF HOME
The couple behind the Chris Loves Julia blog dish about their own labors of love—a young family and their tailor-fit home.
Chris Loves Julia—and we love them! The Idaho home of these popular bloggers is filled with DIYs and inspiration sure to entice you to get out your hammer.
HE IS THE YOUNGEST OF EIGHT CHILDREN WHO SPENT SUMMERS HELPING THEIR DAD BUILD HOUSES. SHE COMES FROM A LONG LINE OF ARTISANS AND, SHE SAYS, INHERITED HER DIY WORK ETHIC FROM HER DAD.
Together, Chris and Julia Marcum are the couple behind the Chris Loves Julia brand, an almost decade-old blog that has grown to include a podcast, a furniture line with Interior Define, and more on the horizon.
“The blog was just to keep our families in the loop of what we were doing, but it turned into this story of how to fall in love with your home,” Julia says. “It’s a real-life story—we are a husband and wife chronicling the renovation of a family-friendly home with three kids and a big dog and how we make that work.”
Chris adds, “We want to do something that’s helpful to others and positive.
And the biggest surprise is how many people are connecting with us.”
Five years ago, the couple purchased their 3,400-square-foot rambler in Rexburg, Idaho, and set to making it their own. At the time,
Chris was working full-time and eldest daughter Greta was a baby. They worked nights, weekends, and even during Chris’ workday lunch breaks to renovate the kitchen, install wood-look tile floors, and more. “Luckily, our first baby was our best sleeper,” Julia says with a laugh.
Since then, Chris has left his marketing career to work full-time on home projects and the family brand, and the Marcums are growing into the four-bedroom home that—thanks to their DIY skills—they’ve made over top to bottom.
“I come up with a lot of the ideas and designs, but I definitely get down and dirty with the building,” Julia says. “I’m the designated painter and caulker, and I can put together anything with instructions, but I leave most of the heavy saw work to Chris—he’s just too good at it.”
