WALL TALK A recessed area on the back of the house was the ideal spot for making a big impact with a plank accent wall, left. To start, Jessica and Kirk screwed a 1×2 header into the soffit that hung over the wall. They attached four vertical cedar 2×4s to the header and the deck floor using pocket holes and screws—one stud butts up against the gutter near the corner of the house, another on the opposite end of the wall area, and the remaining two along each side of the window. Using a nail gun, they attached the horizontal prestained cedar 1×4s to the studs, using a paintbrush handle for consistent spacing between the boards. They cut the boards neatly to fit around the window (A). Since the deck is slightly sloped, the bottom boards were trimmed at an angle to create a flush finish.
“WE HAD OUR LUMBER DELIVERED SINCE WE COULDN’T FIT IT ALL IN OUR TRUCK. WE BOUGHT THE PERGOLA AND WALL LUMBER TOGETHER TO SAVE ON DELIVERY—SO WORTH IT!”
